General Tips and Safety

• DO NOT USE BEFORE GETTING PERMISSION FROM EITHER THE GENERAL MANAGER OR SCOTT WINCHESTER
• ONLY USE OUTSIDE
• Wear appropriate clothing for hot work
  • All cotton or natural fiber clothing. SYNTHETIC CLOTHING WILL MELT TO YOUR SKIN.
  • Leather boots or shoes are preferred. NO OPEN TOED SHOES.
• Wear appropriate safety gear
  • Safety glasses. A small piece of flying debris can cause a lot of damage.
  • Hearing protection. Hammering causes a loud ringing that can damage your hearing, and you will be doing a lot of hammering.
  • Thick leather gloves. These should be heavier than welding gloves. Note - the gloves do not permit you to directly hold hot metal, and only serve as a temporary barrier.
• Treat all metal like it is hot metal! You can't tell just by looking if a piece of metal is hot enough to burn you. Always use the tongs for moving metal until it has fully cooled down.
• Limit how much you travel with hot metal. Set up the forge next to your anvil so you don't have to walk to it.
• NEVER FORGE COATED METALS (GALVANIZED, CHROME-PLATED, ETC). Never heat galvanized metal or metal with a bright finish in your forge. The fumes from these coatings are very TOXIC. Never forge galvanized or coated metals!
